When I checked on my backyard laying hens this morning, I noticed one of them had a very bloody rear end with odd shapes protruding from it.

Upon closer inspection, the hen had a prolapse vent with an egg stuck, or bound. The egg was on the outside of her body, but her insides were still wrapped around it. I was able to loosen and remove the bound egg, and gently wash her prolapse vent.

It was 10 degrees outside in Anchorage, Alaska, today, so before starting anything, I soaked her in the kitchen sink with warm water. She had a lot of frozen poop around her bum that needed to be thawed and loosened up.

This is the first time one of my laying hens has had a prolapse vent or has been egg bound, so it was stressful for both of us, but I was able to remove the egg without breaking it inside of her (which can be a death sentence).
